Re: Iron in soils

Last week, I dug a deep hole to planting a pluot tree. Years ago, my
dad had top soil deleivered which was very black color. Under abut 10
inches of thie black sol, my soil was orange color and a bit more
sandy. Even for that, the iron was still very low. A good concise soil
test is about the only accurate way to know if there is enough iron.
You can't always go by color. In New Jersey and western Connecticut
soil is very red color. almost like brick red. That may be due to a
lot of red clay.

It will take a while to break down. Iron sulfate is a better choice
as it can break down much faster. Because it also lowers pH to an acid
level, you may want to also add some lime to help buffer and bring the
pH back up a little. My soil here was extremely low, even tough this
area has a lot of natural iron. After adding iron sulfate two years
ago, its vastly improved. I used about 50 pounds of it in a 2000 sq.
foot garden area.

yes but only if you are going to plant something that requires acidic soil like azaleas, rhododendrons, blueberries, strawberry, or pine trees.
